Pomona, Calif. – The Palm Springs Power swept a doubleheader against the Inland Valley Bucs Thursday afternoon at Scolinos Field. The Power dominated the first game with a 14-0 victory before winning an intense 2-1 affair in game two.
In the first game of the doubleheader the Power dominated early by scoring eight runs in the first three innings. RBI singles by Andrew Rivas (UC Riverside) and Bubba Thompson (Dakota State) put the Power in front in the first frame.
Palm Springs added on in the second inning with an Ely Brown (Mercer) RBI triple and a Noah Blythe (Hawaii Pacific) RBI single. Then the Power put the game out of reach in the third inning by scoring three runs on RBI singles by Dalton Thomas (St. Katherine’s) and Thompson.
Brenton Thiels (Louisiana Tech) pitched five shutout innings allowing just two hits and striking out six batters with no walks in an excellent start to earn the win. Hudson Boncal (Ohio) pitched the final two frames allowing just one hit and no runs.
Game two of the doubleheader was a much tighter contest. Holden Phelps (Pittsburgh) started on the mound tossing five innings with just a run allowed and a pair of strikeouts..
The Power offense was held down until Thompson tied the game at one in the sixth inning with a solo home run, his second in three games with the Power.
The go-ahead run scored in the seventh inning. Angel Cortez (Cal State Northridge) keyed the inning with a leadoff double. Cody Kashimoto (St. Mary’s) pinch-ran for Cortez and quickly stole third base. Kashimoto then scored the game winning run on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Michael Gonzalez (LA Harbor).
The Power bullpen secured the win. After Phelps, Cale Mathison (The Master’s) pitched two shutout innings with three strikeouts to earn the win. Peyton Von Kaenel (Concordia University Irvine) was credited with the save by pitching two shutout innings to finish the game. In the ninth inning, with the tying run on second base and the winning run on first base, Von Kaenel induced the final out with a fly out.
Thompson led all Power hitters with a six hit afternoon including five RBIs and two runs. Brown finished the day with three hits and two RBIs.
The Power improve to 28-0 on the year with 47 straight club victories dating to the 2023 season.
The series between the Power and Bucs shifts to Palm Springs Stadium on Friday with first pitch at 7 PM. Friday is Hometown Heroes Night at the ballpark with all firefighters, police officers and teachers receiving free admission and fire trucks and police cars on display to tour.
