PALM SPRINGS, Calif – The Palm Springs POWER, currently 25-1 for the 2023 season, head into their final weekend of play as the number one seed in the newly formed California Premier Collegiate League. The four-team league features the POWER as well as three other teams from the Inland Empire; the Pirates, the Bucs, and the Legends. The Legends have handed the POWER their only defeat of the season thus far. While Friday’s contest (first pitch 7:00pm) is a non-league game against the San Diego Bombers, Saturday and Sunday will see the POWER playing in the inaugural CPCL Championship Series against the Inland Valley Bucs.
Saturday’s game will take place at Palm Springs Stadium at 7:00pm, with gates opening at 6:00pm. Sunday will feature two games on the road against the Bucs at Cal Poly Pomona. The odd format actually favors POWER fans as opening the series with a double header on the road may have meant that the best-of-three series concluded without the POWER taking the field on their home turf. Therefore, the decision was made to have Game 1 in Palm Springs on Saturday, with Games 2 and 3 following on Sunday on the road. Saturday’s starting pitcher will be right hander Seth Mattox out of Cal Baptist University. He will enter the start with a 4-0 record and a 1.45 ERA. Other notable players for the POWER heading into the weekend finale include 1B/OF Noah Blythe who is hitting .379 with 23 RBI, Michael Groves who sports a .359 average with 1HR, and Jacob Mejia with a .327 average to go along with 1HR. While the schedule over the next few days is grueling, especially coming off of a road double header on Thursday the 13th, should the POWER win out, they will put a cap on what would be the winningest season ever in the history of POWER baseball.
