The Palm Springs Power went into Wednesday night hoping to sweep the 2 game mid-week series against the SoCal Mavericks. Miles Halligan started on the bump for Casey Dill and the Power tossing 5 innings off 1 run ball.
That strong outing from Halligan was more than enough for the Power as their offense exploded for 13 runs. 6 of those 13 runs came across in the first inning before an out was recorded. Each BYU representative, Tate Gambill and Bryant Ball, had an rbi single. Cal Baptist first baseman Mark Kirkland made his return to the lineup and drove in 3 including 2 on a hustle double in that big first inning.
Brandon Leon, CSUN product and brother of Power infielder Jason Leon, lead off the bottom of the 6th with a bang. Leon lined the first pitch just barely foul. After evening up the count at 1-1, Leon crushed the ball over the right field wall for the first Power home run of the season. That made the score an emphatic 10-1.
The Power added on 3 more and the pitching continued their dominance that has become synonymous with the Power. Matt Porter pitched 2 innings in relief and gave up just one unearned run. Dorsey Chatham, of Nevada, struck out the side in order in the eighth. Finally College of the Desert’s own Kenny Shechter shut it down in the 9th to secure the 13th win of the year with 2 K’s of his own.
The Power have won 2 in a row and look to make it 3 this Friday against the Colten Nighthawks. Friday is a special day at Palm Springs Stadium.
