PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Willie Bourbon wasn’t exactly known for his power in his freshman year at Northwestern. In fact, the Riverwoods, IL native only hit two home runs in 52 starts for the Wildcats.
Bourbon’s second home run in six games highlighted an early offensive onslaught and the POWER held on for win number seven on the year.
“I guess I’m just seeing it pretty well out here,” Bourbon remarked. “I’m out of the cold so the ball flies a little better. I’m just trying to put good wood on it.”
The POWER scored ten times in the first two innings and looked to be in control of the ballgame but the Halos didn’t go quietly into the Palm Springs night.
They scored the game’s next six runs to make things interesting, but the 10-run deficit was a bit too much.
POWER starter Cameron Neff (St. Mary’s) lasted four innings in his first start and left the game with a 10-3 lead. Jacob Nemeth’s three-run double was the lone offensive highlight for the Halos, who couldn’t put enough runs on the board.
Bourbon wasn’t the only member of the POWER to have a successful night at the plate.
John Mauldin recorded four hits, David Posas drove in a pair and Kaleb Foster had three RBI as well to pace the POWER offense.
Head Coach Casey Dill loves the way the lineup is shaping up:
“Our lineup is strong from top to bottom. We really don’t have too many guys that aren’t hitting the ball well,” Dill said after the game. “When we get to conference next weekend and roll our best nine out there, it’s going to be a very good lineup. I don’t know what our batting average is as a team, but I’m sure it’s very impressive.”
The POWER are off tomorrow night but will be back in action Tuesday night when the Nevada Bulls come to town.
