The Palm Spring POWER’s 2013 roster grew by one following the conclusion of Monday’s league tryout at Palm Springs Stadium.

With all six coaches from the SCCBL on hand to scrutinize more than 40 hopefuls, California Baptist University second baseman Antonio Chavarria impressed the POWER coaching staff enough to earn a uniform when the season begins Friday at Palm Springs Stadium.

“Our team is pretty well set so we aren’t in a lot of need, but we were always looking for good ball players and we were able to pick up a second baseman,” said POWER Manager Harry Gurley.

Chavarria, a 5’10”, 190 pound right-hander, recently completed his freshman season at Cal Baptist. In 58 games, including 52 starts, Chavarria hit .287 with 9 home runs and 34 runs driven in for the Lancers.

Chavarria is no stranger to the Coachella Valley, having starred for the Indio High School varsity baseball team for four years. He was named first team all-league each year, batting .426 with 3 home runs as a senior. That followed up a junior campaign in which he hit .500 with 37 runs driven in.

The Palm Springs POWER open the 2013 season on Friday, May 31st when they host the Tucson Nationals at 7:05pm. For ticket information, contact the POWER office at (760) 778-4487 or go online at palmspringspowerbaseball.com.
