Palm Springs, Calif. – The Palm Springs Power hosted the Alameda Merchants at Palm Springs Stadium in the first of a two game mid-week set on Tuesday night.
After walking off their first two games of the season against the Utah Yaks, the Power made it three in a row after a bases-loaded walk by Amari Conley scored Juni Rodriguez from third to win 8-7.
It was a back and forth battle between the two teams with four lead changes. Each came out the gates with a run in the first before Alameda took a 2-1 lead into the third. A pair of two run innings for the power had them up 5-2. After two runs for the Merchants, the Power held on to a one run lead into the ninth.
Javier Vasquez took over for Jimi Welsher in the seventh and retired the first seven batters he faced. The Merchants put him in a jam with two on in the ninth. Down to their last out, Gio Martini sent a three-run home run over the right field fence to take a 7-5 lead.
The Power sent the top of the lineup to the plate in the bottom of the ninth. The first five base runners reached and Palm Springs tied the game and eventually won after Conely’s walk.
Vasquez was credited with his first win of the season and Jason Olivera who pitched the entire ninth received the loss.
The two teams meet again on Wednesday for game two of the series. First pitch will be at 7:00with gates opening at 6:00. It will be Xavier Alumni night at the park along a wild wednesday discounted margarita promotion at the concessions stand.
