Palm Springs, Calif. – After trouncing the Inland Valley Buccaneers 13-5 on Friday, the Palm Springs Power completed the two-game series sweep on Saturday, beating the Buccaneers 5-3.
All five Power runs came exclusively from a 4th inning eruption, which featured all nine of the team’s hitters, along with four hits.
The game-changing swing, however, was Matthew Mecate’s two-run double, which put the Power ahead 2-1, after they had fallen behind 1-0.
Immediately following Mecate’s double, right fielder Nick English drove in a pair of runs on a single, extending the Power lead to 4-1.
Jeremiah Acosta knocked in the fifth run of the inning two batters later with an RBI single of his own.
The lone stain on the Power’s offensive performance was the lack of production from Caden Richards, who was unable to extend his season-long hit streak to an astounding 12 games.
Richards finished the game 0-3, with a walk and a GIDP.
More important for the Power, though, was the remarkable performance from starting pitcher Cam Witte, who hurled seven innings while yielding just two earned runs. He also struck out eight Buccaneers en route to being named player of the game.
The bullpen was equally impressive, protecting the two-run Power lead after Witte’s departure, as Cipriano Rivera and Alexander Oliver combined for two scoreless frames.
Collecting the loss was Colby Creamer, who allowed five earned runs on four hits and a pair of walks.
Creamer’s implosion followed a dominant performance from Buccaneers’ starter Vincent Rodriguez, who allowed just one hit across a scoreless three-inning outing.
The Power will next face off against the Inland Valley Pirates on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM, with stadium gates opening an hour before. —
