Palm Springs, Calif. – The Palm Springs Power continued their winning ways this weekend, decisively defeating the Utah Labs 9-2 in the second and final game of their two-game series. Building on their impressive opening night performance, the Power showcased their depth and talent, securing a dominant sweep to kick off their 21st season. The back-to-back victories over the Labs underscore the team’s championship aspirations as they aim for a third consecutive California Premier Collegiate League title.
Power got another victory over Utah Lab in a big way and in the form of 7 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning after the Utah Lab tied the game in the top of the 7th inning at 2-apiece. Power finished off their opening day weekend with a 9-2 victory in game 2 against the Lab. With 6 total Power players making their Power debut in Jamal Ritter, KJ Moon, Bryant O’Neil, Coen Goeas, Isaac Rodrigues, and Lucas Zack who was the starting pitcher.
After winning the previous night 9-3 against the Lab, the Power started off the evening with a trio of singles that resulted in the first runs of the day off the bat of Myles Walton’s RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. Then up until the bottom of the 5th inning, both sides weren’t able to score a run until Walton scored his second RBI of the evening off a sacrifice fly to score Coen Goes who leadoff the inning taking a hit by pitch.
The Labs in the top of the 7th inning managed to get runners on first and second with no one out and Turman Dureya delivered a 2 RBI double to tie up the game. After Riley Ricken forced a flyout to Walton and a groundout to Coen Goeas to hold the Lab at two runs, the Power switched it up on the Lab against Boede Rudd in the bottom of the seventh. Isaac Rodrigues led off with a triple in the right-center gap and immediately after, Casey Kleinmen knocked his own triple to score Rodrigues to take back the lead 3-2. The power never looked back with an RBI single by Jamal Ritter and a hit by pitch for Walton who both would score on a two RBI single by Mark Kirkland. A flurry of forced errors by Christian Perez and KJ Moon allowed yet another run to score. Bryant O’Neil and Coen Goeas would both knock sacrifice flies to score two more runs to total it up to 7 runs in the bottom of the 7th.
Power pitching had another great outing with Lucas Zack leading the way as the starter on the hill going for 4 innings giving up 2 hits, 1 walk, and 4 strikeouts. James Williams would take over for two innings striking out three and giving up just a single hit. Riley Ricken would give up the two RBI double to tie the game, but hold Utah and get himself the win. Richie Amavizca would pitch one inning and draw a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout to top it off. Naun Haro would finish off the game with three strikeouts and leaving two runners on the bases for a 9-2 final score. Power will play against the Palm Springs Police Department and Fire Department for a fundraiser exhibition game and then take on the San Diego Bombers on Tuesday June 3rd which is $3 beer tuesdays at the ballpark. — Stay connected to all the Palm Springs Power action, even when you can’t make it to the stadium!
