Palm Springs, Calif. – The 20th season of Palm Springs Power baseball was unforgettable. Power fans will long remember 2024 from an enthralling championship finish to setting the longest winning streak in franchise history.
1. The Walk-off Home Run to Win the Championship- Noah Blythe (Hawaiʻi Pacific) hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning of the winner-take-all game three of the CPCL Championship Series against the San Diego Waves in one of the most exciting moments in Power history.
After the Power dominated the Inland Valley Bucs to win the inaugural 2023 CPCL Championship Series the 2024 series was a riveting spectacle. All three games were decided by two runs or less with the Power winning games two and three on Sunday at the Cougar Baseball Complex in Azusa.
The Power won their tenth outright championship in 20 seasons. The 2023 and 2024 seasons are the first back-to-back Power titles since 2012-2015 when Palm Springs won four straight championships.
2. The Win Streak- The Power season was historic for setting the longest win streak in franchise history. Palm Springs won 32 consecutive games to start the season after winning the final 19 games of 2023 for a 51 game win streak that only ended in the last week of the 2024 season.
The 51 game win streak smashed the previous record of 37 straight franchise wins set by the 2019 Power to start their season which still stands as the longest win streak to start a Power season.
Palm Springs’ 2024 winning percentage of .946% with a 35-2 record finishes as the third best victory rate in franchise history.
3. Power Professionals- The lineage of Power players entering professional baseball continued in 2024.
Kyle Mosley (Pittsburgh) and Bubba Thompson (Dakota State) both starred for the Power and signed professional contracts in the Pioneer League. Mosley was one of the best Power pitchers over the last two seasons with a 1.79 ERA in 55.1 IP before inking a deal with the Billings Mustangs.
Thompson hit for a .437 BA with two home runs for the Power before signing with the Boise Hawks. He started his season in Palm Springs in the Power Summer Collegiate League (PSCL) with a .375 BA across 21 games.
In addition, two former Power players were drafted in the 2024 MLB Draft. Infielder JR Freethy (University of Nevada, Reno) from the 2021 Power was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 14th round. The Los Angeles Dodgers drafted 2022 Power pitcher Evan Shaw (Kansas) in the 16th round.
Many Power alumni continued to have success at the highest level of baseball. Catcher Brian Serven and pitchers Tyler Wells and Bryan Shaw all made MLB opening day rosters. Former Power pitcher Aaron Brooks from the 2009 and 2010 teams also has had a memorable year as a part of the Oakland Athletics starting rotation with five appearances including two quality starts as of Friday.
4. Offensive Power Surge- The key of the 2024 Power was an explosive offense. Palm Springs scored double-digit runs in 19 of 37 games this season.
Palm Springs averaged 9.7 runs/game while hitting with a .345 BA and a .440 OBP. The long ball also played a big factor in the Power’s offensive success with 19 home runs- the most hit in a single season since 2017.
Along with Blythe, numerous Power batters played a huge factor in the offensive success. Austin Haller (Western Kentucky) totaled a .356 BA on the year with 48 hits, Aiden Taurek (St. Mary’s) was second on the team with a .403 BA while bashing five home runs and Ely Brown (Mercer) was the team’s consummate leadoff batter with a .489 OBP and 40 runs scored.
5. “Mr. Power”- Noah Blythe’s walk-off championship home run was only the apex of his record breaking 2024. He smashed the all-time Power single season record with 50 RBI breaking TJ Bennet’s record of 40 RBI from 2013. Blythe’s .407 BA this year is the fifth highest mark in Power history and his 55 hits on the season tie for the third most ever in the organization.
Blythe also marched to the top of the all-time Power charts this season breaking franchise records with 94 career runs and 90 RBI over his three seasons in Palm Springs. His 25 doubles and 124 total hits are both second most in franchise history. After three years and 79 games with the Power, Blythe’s career .405 BA is the second best in Power history only behind Palm Springs great Cody Ducote.
