The Palm Springs POWER got yet another solid start from Jack Carberry, was credit the win after defeating the Riverside Bulldogs.
Carberry went five innings, giving up two runs on two hits and struck-out six on his way to his third victory of conference play.
Things got off to a rocky start as Carberry walked the first two batters in Zach Amante and Drew Navigato. The right-handed pitcher would then strikeout Omar Veloz and force Angel Ortiz into a 4-6-3 double play to end the first inning.
The POWER struck first in the bottom of the second. Shunto Kamoshida (Keio University) got things going with a single into right field, which was then followed by a single by Chris Dunn (College of Southern Nevada). Both runners advanced thanks to an error. Josh Hernandez (College of the Desert) brought Kamoshida in with the single and Dunn scored off of a Kevin Morden (UCLA) infield hit.
In what would end up being Carberry’s final inning of work, the Bulldogs pulled back into a tie in the top of the fifth.
Shane Martinez hit a single between shortstop and third base, bringing A.J. Jurado in from second and sending Brandon Galindo to second. Amante followed with a hit in the same location, bringing Galindo in for the game-tying run.
After the Bulldogs pulled back into the game, the POWER took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Kamoshida hit a single to center, bringing Ben Nisle (Purdue) home and Spencer Weston (San Diego State) to second. Dunn would then add two more runs with a stand up triple after Galindo lost sight of the ball in center field. After five, the POWER would have a 6-2 lead.
The Bulldogs tried to pull back in the top of the sixth, scoring a run thanks to an Ortiz single to bring Navigato in, cutting the lead to 6-3.
The POWER would add one more run in the bottom of the eighth, as Austin Reyes (Santa Clara University) hit an RBI double to bring Morden in for the 7-2 lead.
Darin May (Cal Poly Pomona) came in the top of the ninth to finish the game, giving up one run to Jurado, who brought in Ortiz for the final run of the game. May would finish the game up and seal the POWER’s victory.
With the win, the POWER move to 12-5 in SCCBL play, while the Bulldogs fall to 7-9.
