The Palm Springs POWER picked up a huge conference win on Saturday night, defeating the SCCBL-leading Inland Valley Pirates 6-1. Jack Carberry (Western Illinois) took the ball for the POWER and was lights out in the win, hurling seven innings of two-hit of ball. Chris Dunn (Southern Nevada) launched a mammoth home run to center in the eighth, putting an exclamation point on an impressive victory.
Leadoff hitter Matt Green (Saint Mary’s) continued to find ways to reach base for the POWER. Green was plunked for the seventh time this season to start the game and tempers flared as the POWER were struck by pitches in three straight at-bats to start the bottom-half of the first. The Sophomore leads the SCCBL in walks and batting average, and he reached base three more times on Saturday night, finishing 1-2 with a run scored and a stolen base.
Dunn returned to the lineup Saturday night with a bang. The Sophomore went 2-5 with a double, an RBI, a stolen base and a moonshot home run in the eighth inning. The solo shot was a rare feat of strength, as it cleared the notoriously deep center field fence which measures 385 feet.
Carberry was masterful in his fifth start, tossing seven two-hit innings with seven strikeouts, two walks, and no earned runs. The big right-hander from Western Illinois picked up his team-leading fourth victory of the season, giving the POWER bullpen some much-needed rest in the process.
