PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – LSU’s Cody Ducote got his revenge this evening as he took Sentinel reliever Anthony Mizrahi’s two-strike fastball into right field, scoring Colby Schultz and John Mauldin on the play, leading the POWER to a 4-3 victory over the Arroyo Seco Sentinels.
Ducote has been tearing the cover off of the ball as of late, but unfortunately right at well-positioned fielders. As he came through with what would be the game-winning RBI’s, you could visibly see a sigh of relief from the POWER’s designated hitter.
“I didn’t get the job done earlier; I had a situation with men on just trying to put the ball in play and I lined out to second base,” Ducote said to Clinton Cole after the game. “I was thankful to get another chance in the same situation and (being able to come through) with the game on the line.” Ducote would finish the night 2-for-4 with three RBI and a steal of third, making him the player of the game for the POWER on offense.
On the hill, CJ Broussard was tasked with trying to continue the POWER’s winning streak and answered the call diligently, hurling 7.1 innings, limiting the Sentinels to eight hits while striking out five. Most impressively, the Cal State LA right-hander, who usually comes out of the pen, made only his third start of the year and didn’t walk anyone in his longest performance of the 2016 campaign. Broussard would get the win after handing things over to UNLV’s Bryan Menendez who nailed down the final five outs for his first save of the season.
Some players to note for the POWER include UC Riverside’s Colby Schultz, who went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base in his second game of the year after making his debut yesterday.
Baylor’s West Tunnell who put on an incredible display of arm strength from left field, gunning down Sentinels’ third baseman Gabe Chavez when he tried to stretch a single into a double in the sixth inning.
The POWER improve to 17-6 overall and 6-4 in conference play with the weekend sweep of the Arroyo Seco Sentinels.
Their next opponent will be Southern Nevada on the 4th of July at Palm Springs Stadium. Be sure to get your tickets for that 6:05 start and directly following the game will be a fireworks display in celebration of our country’s independence!
