Anderson, Young Honored With SCCBL Weekly Awards

PALM SPRINGS, CA — POWER starting pitcher Matt Anderson pitched his third-straight complete-game shutout on Tuesday night, earning his third consecutive honor as Southern California Collegiate Baseball League pitcher of the week. Third baseman Chesny Young, who hit .588 during the week, was also selected as SCCBL hitter of the week.

The POWER, who have clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Southern California Collegiate Baseball League championship series, have won eight straight and 18 of their last 19.

Anderson (5-1) extended his scoreless streak to 29 innings, while striking out 18 batters. His stellar night brought his season strikeout total to 74 and his ERA is now down to 1.24 in nine appearances. His 74 strikeouts put him in first place all-time on the POWER single-season strikeout list.

Young led an 18-run offensive outburst for Palm Springs last Sunday night, going 5-for-6 with three doubles, a triple, two runs scored and six runs batted in. The five hits, six RBIs and four extra-base hits were all season highs for any POWER player.

During the week, Young batted 10-17 (.588) with four doubles, two triples, seven runs scored, eight RBIs and two stolen bases.

The Mercer University third baseman is now hitting .326 and is tied for second on the team with 22 RBIs.
