POWER SOAK UP THE FUN
POWER Players Make Annual Trip To Knott’s Soak City

(Saturday, July 12, 2008) Palm Springs, California. The Palm Springs POWER baseball team signed autographs for their awaiting fans at local Knott’s Soak City on July 10th from noon-three p.m.

POWER players headed to Knott’s Soak City to beat the heat while signing some autographs outside the water park for their young fans. Before entering the park for some summer fun, the team collectively blew up and signed a large inflatable baseball to give to the staff at Knott’s as a small token of their gratitude. The boys then headed inside to have fun on attractions such as the Pacific Spin, the Lazy River, and the Wave Pool.

“Knott’s is a great place to go and keep cool when the heat is getting to you,” says POWER pitcher from University of Southern California Ryan Cabral, “I just love the rides and environment in general.”

This is only one of POWER’s frequent community appearances. For more information about the team or where they will be volunteering next, check out our community events page.

POWER Players “Catch” the Reading Bug
By POWER Media Relations Intern Priscilla Yacoub

(July, 7, 2008) On yet another golden day in Palm Springs, POWER players volunteer their time to play an educational rendition of bingo at the Palm Springs Library. The event is a part of the library’s “Catch the Reading Bug” summer program in which children participate in numerous events carefully constructed to enhance their reading skills.

POWER players Billy Ott, Chris Baek, Ryan Cabral, Garrett Queen, Brandon Sandoval, and Matt Roquemore sat alongside 37 children to play a very ‘buggy’ game of bingo. The game’s theme coincides with the name of the program by incorporating bug place holders to top the insect terms on the bingo sheets.

While POWER pitchers Ryan Cabral from University of Southern California, Brandon Sandoval from Sacramento State, and outfielder Garrett Queen from University of Portland refereed the game, pitcher Chris Baek out of Sacramento State found acceptance with 2 month old Emmanuel, playing peek-a-boo and making the infant laugh.

While Baek was entertaining the youngest of attendees, POWER pitcher Billy Ott from Cal State Northridge situated himself among numerous children, pretending to play a competitive game of bingo while making the children laugh with statements such as, “I think I pitch better than I play bingo, and that’s a problem.” Billy then boldly took the spotlight by singing baseball’s historic “Take Me Out To The Ball Game” to commemorate the song’s 100 year anniversary (as shown above).

The team left the library with grins a mile wide after being thanked by program coordinator Sharon Snow for their kind involvement. ”It was definitely beneficial for the children”, says POWER outfielder Matt Roquemore from University of Hawaii, “but its also a great experience for the players to be able to interact with local kids and help make learning fun.”
